The Vision
Every successful interior begins with understanding how people want to feel, not simply how they want their home to look.
When we started this living room interior design project in Hampstead Garden Suburb, the family already had a beautiful everyday living space. Rather than creating another room with the same purpose, my clients wanted something entirely different.
They dreamed of a second living room.
A place to escape after a demanding day. Somewhere to welcome friends, enjoy uninterrupted conversations, curl up with a book or simply spend quality time together once the children had gone to bed.
The room also needed to surprise. It had to create a genuine wow factor while feeling completely different from the rest of the house.
As a North London interior designer, I often find that the most memorable spaces aren't the loudest ones—they're the rooms that quietly change the atmosphere of an entire home.
We started designing the space in April and deliberately took our time. The right mood couldn't be rushed. Every decision had to contribute to the feeling we were trying to create.

Creating the Atmosphere
Atmosphere became the true luxury of this room.
The deep blue walls immediately create a sense of calm and intimacy, wrapping the room in warmth rather than making it feel dark. To enhance that cocooning effect, the ceiling was painted in a soft grey, visually lowering the space and making it feel more comfortable and secure.
Lighting played an equally important role.
Instead of relying on bright ceiling lights, we introduced layers of light positioned at eye level. As evening arrives, the room transforms into a peaceful retreat where the lighting naturally encourages you to slow down, switch off and stay a little longer.
Can you imagine sinking into one of the beautifully soft sofas, chatting with your partner over drinks and snacks while music plays quietly in the background? That simple image became the foundation for every design decision.
Atmosphere became the true luxury of this room.

Designing Around the People Who Live Here
One of my favourite parts of every project happens long before I begin selecting furniture.
It's observing people.
During my very first meeting with the clients, I noticed they were naturally drawn towards soft, flowing shapes. They responded instinctively to curves rather than rigid lines, even without consciously recognising it themselves. That observation became one of the strongest design stories throughout the room.
Organic forms appear repeatedly—in the sofas, lighting, accessories and decorative details—bringing movement, softness and a relaxed elegance to the space. These subtle repetitions create harmony without the room ever feeling predictable.
This is one of the things I love most about bespoke residential interior design. Every project develops its own language, inspired by the personalities of the people who live there.

Instead of arranging the seating around the perimeter, I brought the sofas into the centre of the room, making them the heart of the space. They act as an anchor, naturally inviting conversation while keeping generous circulation around the room.
The layout supports every way the family wanted to use the room.
-A quiet morning reading with coffee.
-An evening movie.
-Drinks with close friends.
-Children joining for board games at the weekend or simply opening the doors to the garden and enjoying the connection between inside and outside.

Sometimes the biggest transformation comes from changing the architecture rather than adding more furniture.
Originally, the room connected directly to the kitchen through an internal doorway. We decided to close that opening and build a new wall, creating greater privacy and separating this room from the busier parts of the house. That single change completely altered the experience of the space. Instead of becoming a route through the house, the room became a destination—a place where you instinctively slow down the moment you walk inside.
The Quiet Details
Every detail has been selected to support the atmosphere rather than compete for attention.
The television needed to be present for relaxed movie nights without dominating the room, which made a frameless TV screen the perfect choice. It quietly blends into the interior instead of becoming the focal point.
Natural timber, tactile fabrics and layered textures add warmth throughout the space, while carefully curated decorative objects make the room feel collected over time rather than decorated in a single day.
